Admitting Privilege

Admitting privilege allows patients to be admitted to the hospital without first going through the ER. Working alongside hospital staff, patients can be treated by their physician.

Courtesy Privilege

Courtesy privilege means patients can be admitted - but not treated - by their physician at a hospital. In some cases, patients can be visited by their physician who can provide guidance on patient care services.

Surgical Privilege

Surgical privilege authorizes patients to receive outpatient operating room surgeries within a hospital or surgery center. Medical practitioners with surgical privileges can book operating rooms at these healthcare facilities.

Hospital Privileges vs. Hospital Credentialing

Hospital credentialing and hospital privileges are two separate processes despite their similarities. For most medical practitioners, the hospital credentialing process comes first. The credentialing process, among other things, includes the specified healthcare facility ensuring you can provide safe, quality patient care. This includes providing proof of your medical training and education. If you're given credentials by the accrediting bodies, you can request hospital privileges. If, for any reason, you're not able to be credentialed, you may not be granted privileges.

How Physicians Obtain Hospital Privileges

Medicare and the Joint Commission allow individual hospitals to grant privileges. However, healthcare organizations are responsible for upholding proper credentialing and privileging processes. To ensure against fraud and malpractice, many hospitals create a medical executive committee from respected medical staff to approve or deny credentialing and privileging requests.
